Working with plant remedies to reverse the effects of sun damage is a process of strengthening and rebuilding the skin. Tammy’s approach is gentle, yet effective, focussing on stimulating repair in the skin’s deepest layers, where collagen and elastin fibers can be damaged through UVB sun exposure.
Key to this approach is layering the skin with serum and a moisturizing crème to provide essential nourishment, hydration and protection during the healing process. At the same time, you will want to avoid extremes of heat and cold. Warm is just right when cleansing, and as you go throughout the day.
AM & PM protocol:
Step 1: Bulgarian Rose Water. If you’ve cleansed the skin well at night, start your routine with a gentle spritz of Bulgarian Rose Water. Rejuvenating Rose is a powerful ally in this protocol, providing a vast array of nutrients. (At night, wash with gentle Cleansing Milk and follow with Bulgarian Rose Water.)
Step 2: Quintessential Serum. Press one to two precious drops of Tammy’s ultra-concentrated serum into the skin. Crafted with pure Rose and Frankincense, known for its restorative capacities. Massage gently, releasing any tension in the musculature.
Step 3: Depending on your skin type, choose Celestial Rose Crème, our velvety mid-weight moisturizer, blended with pure essence of Rose and hydrating, nutrient-rich Manuka Honey. Or choose Spontaneous Recovery Crème, Tammy’s richest moisturizer, infused with rehydrating powerhouses including Buriti Fruit and Iris Root.
2 x Week: Restorative Radiance Masque. Blended with essence of Rose, and richly nutritive Baobab and Lotus, this lavish facial mask brings deep rejuvenation to the skin. Pat a single drop of Quintessential Serum into the skin before applying a rich layer, allowing the skin to drink in all the benefits for up to 20 minutes. Remove gently with a soft cloth and warm water.
If possible, please wait 20 - 30 minutes for these benefits to fully absorb into the skin before applying sunscreen.
Skin is vulnerable to sun damage when deeply penetrating UVA radiation stresses collagen and elastin, or UVB radiation irritates and inflames surface layers of the skin, having more immediate effects.
Sun damage manifests in different ways. Commonly those with sun damage will see an uneven skin tone, including sun spots, especially found on delicate areas of the face, hands and décolleté or arms. Freckles may increase, or broken blood vessels may result in redness or a ruddiness of complexion.
Over time, collagen and elastin breakdown leads of fine lines and a loss of firmness, as well as dryness. Tammy’s repair protocol is based on providing skin with a massive infusion of hydration and easy-to-absorb nutrients, provided by botanical remedies that stimulate regeneration.
While everyone knows just how essential sunscreen is for protecting the skin, it’s important to remember that many sunscreens—including natural sunscreens—are made with ingredients that can have a dehydrating effect on the skin.
Tammy suggests a holistic approach to protecting skin from sun damage.
1) Rely on physical block when outdoors—hats, pareos, sunglasses and light long-sleeved shirts. Tammy always recommends light layers of physical protection as well as mineral sunscreens.
2) Use a mineral sunscreen, but always layer over a moisturizing crème that helps maintain hydration. Apply sunscreen only 10-20 minutes after your crème, allowing all the benefits to absorb into skin first.
3) Because sunscreens tend to deplete the skin, wash off any sunscreen as soon as you come indoors. Use Epi-Peel to cleanse away any build up, and reapply nourishing and protective formulas. (Luminous Morning Crème is a great, light moisturizer for warmer weather and for oily or blemish-prone skin types.)
3) Choose to approach sun care from a holistic perspective—eating foods that help keep skin hydrated and resilient to sun exposure. Lemon is said to strengthen melanin production, and beta carotene, found in carrots, boosts skin’s protection. Freshly juiced citrus provides so many benefits, including a big dose of Vitamin-C to fend off potential toxins.
4) Choose to spend time outdoors when the sun is at its lowest, in the early mornings and evenings, enjoying the cooler air.
With a gentle circular motion, apply a small amount of cleanser to face and neck, morning and evening, whisking away impurities. Remove with a warm moist cloth. Repeat if removing makeup, and follow with your favorite floral water.
Liberally apply the floral water or tonic best suited to your skin type to a cotton pad and sweep over face and neck, morning and evening, or as needed to restore, re-hydrate and soothe the skin. Each of our tonics maintain skin’s precious ph balance.
With the fingertips, gently press ultra-concentrated treatment serums into the skin, providing essential nutrients and added protection to the skin. Use morning and evening or as needed, refreshing the skin with a luminous sheen.
Apply a desired amount to face and neck, allowing cream to absorb. May be used morning and evening, or as often as needed to nourish and protect skin, sealing in hydration with a protective veil. If you wear makeup or sunscreen, layer these over your moisturizer.
Exfoliants and treatment masks can be used up to 3 times weekly, in combination, or alone, to support deep cleansing and restoration, while revealing a fresh, polished complexion.
